X-ray Crystallography Laboratory
Our Facility
The single-crystal X-ray diffractometer, a Bruker D8 Quest PHOTON 100 CMOS X-ray diffractometer system is located in Room 1027 of STEM-1 Building. This instrument is used to collect X-ray reflection intensity data from samples in a form of single crystal to determine molecular structures for chemical materials such as inorganic, organic and organometallic compounds. Primary crystallographic software is the APEX suite in which SHELXTL programs are fully integrated for structure solution and refinement.
Our Services
Data Collection, Structure Solution, and Analysis
The following services are provided: evaluation of crystal quality; unit cell determination; data collection and absorption correction; structure solution and refinement; production of a structure analysis package including CIF files, tables/reports, orteps diagrams for publication; comprehensive analysis of the structural results including conformation of molecules such as cis- or trans- conformation and other geometric features.
Consultations
The following consultations are offered: advices on single crystal growing, selection, and mounting for both air-stable and air-sensitive samples; how to interpret and present structural results; and consultations on matters relating to X-ray crystallography and structure solutions.
Sample Submission
While the majority of samples originate in departments and institutes on the campus of The University of Georgia, samples from other colleges and universities, as well as from companies are also accepted. Crystals, which are left in their mother liquor whenever possible, should be submitted along with submission form which is available below from this page. Please contact the Facility Director for the service fees and questions concerning the submission procedure.
Service Fees
All users must provide an account number to be charged before using the facility. The service fees are used to operate and maintain the X-ray facility. The information related to fees may be obtained by contacting the Facility Director. For potential clients from outside of UGA, we will provide an excellent service for small molecule structure determination at a competitive price. We also provide fast service according to clients' specific requirements. For USG universities or colleges, $125/structure or $100/sample data collection. For more information, please send an email to contact the Facility Director (pwei@uga.edu).
